From the desk of Monsignor Bride
A week and a half ago, on Tuesday, October 17th, I attended a meeting for all Deacons and Priests of the Diocese of Norwich in Holy Family Church Hall in Hebron. This was required of all of us because on December 3rd, the First Sunday of Advent, the guidelines for the celebration of Mass will be implemented here in this Diocese of Norwich. These have been approved by the Holy Father with additional specifics for the Church in the United States by the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB).
These new guidelines are contained in the General Instruction of the (new) Roman Missal. The Latin version of the new Roman Missal has been approved and these guidelines are the introduction to that new Missal. However, the English translation for that new Missal is not yet approved and thus, it may be two or three years before we have in hand the new Roman Missal. We cannot implement the changes in the Missal because of some of the exact translations. (For instance: The priest presently says “THE LORD BE WITH YOU”, and the people respond, “AND ALSO WITH YOU.” The new translation states, “ET CUM SPIRITU TUO.” That is translated “AND WITH YOUR SPIRIT.”)
However, the new guidelines which are contained in the introduction to the New Roman Missal have the title of ‘THE GENERAL INSTRUCTION OF THE NEW ROMAN MISSAL.” These are going into effect on December 3, 2006, the First Sunday in Advent. Before attending the meeting, I had thought that we in OLPH had implemented most of the changes in the GENERAL INSTRUCTION - SUCH AS THE USE OF THE GOLD TRAY WHICH HAS 4 CHALICES ON IT SO THAT THE PRECIOUS BLOOD IS NEVER POURED, which is then disrespectful to the Eucharist. This is one of the new guidelines of the General Instruction.
While at the meeting, I discovered that there are several matters which we in OLPH are not implementing and we are going to have to initiate these by December 3rd, 2006.
A few of these are as follows:
1) The exact time when the Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion leave their chairs and enter the sanctuary. We have to make a change here.
2) The primary minister of the cup (as stated in the new General Instruction) is the Deacon. We will have to make a change here in this.
3) The rules for purification of the chalices is strictly outlined and we will have to make an adjustment here.
4) Bowing and genuflecting in the sanctuary are strictly interpreted and we have a few adjustments here.
5) The manner of purifying the chalices after communion is distributed, is also strictly set forth. We are doing this correctly here in OLPH but we shall reaffirm this before the December 3rd weekend.
Following the Vatican Council, the Church gave a period of time for some innovations, some trials in the manner of celebrating. After having reviewed these, the Church has now decided that the period of experimentation is concluded and so it has issued the General Instruction of the Roman Missal, which is where everyone will find the proper rules governing the celebrating of the Eucharist. While these will cause some adjustments, we must remember that the Church governs the celebration of Mass and we must conform.

Stewardship Month!
November is Stewardship Month in OLPH. Each November, every parishioner is asked to review his/her weekly contribution made to God in OLPH Parish. This is a most important time. Our budget is tight as Monsignor explained last week in the Annual Report. We need to give to God what the work of God needs to be carried out here in OLPH. Our future depends on it.

A NEW TELEVISION !
Recently, Father R. Roughan retired as Pastor of Saint Paul Church in Waterford. He then moved to Windham Falls in Groton. His new dwelling is much smaller than the rectory and in fact, too small for his very large 50 inch television set. He has graciously given this beautiful instrument to Our Lady of Perpetual Help parish. He has purchased a new (smaller) set which fits nicely on his wall and will provide him many hours of relaxation and rest in his retirement. At present the 50” set is in the rectory cellar. Once the Fair/Bazaar/Tag Sale is over, we will move the TV to the hall. It will not be connected for regular television watching but Monsignor will purchase a DVD Player which will enable the parish to view pertinent movies, educational programs, material for Religious Education for youth and adults. Thank you Father for your generous gift and kindness to OLPH.
