THE SOLEMNITY OF THE NATIVITY
SAINT JOHN THE BAPTIST
We celebrate, this weekend, the Solemnity of the Nativity of St. John the Baptist. This is a major feast in the Church year and takes the place of the liturgy of the 12th Sunday in Ordinary Time. St. John the Baptist was an integral part of the redemptive plan of God for saving the human race from sin. He was conceived in the womb of his mother, Elizabeth, having been promised by the Angel Gabriel to his Father, Zechariah. They were already in their old age. When the same Angel Gabriel visited Mary in Nazareth six months later, he informed her of Elizabeth’s pregnancy and how this was all in the plan of the Lord to bring a Savior to the world. Mary went in haste to visit Elizabeth and these two chosen women rejoiced in the mystery of the Lord and how his plans were being fulfilled in them.
Saint John the Baptist is the link between the promised Salvation History of the Old Testament and the actualization of that history in the New Testament.
The solemnity of
Saints Peter and Paul
On Friday of this week, we celebrate the Solemnity of Saints Peter and Paul, Apostles. These Apostles of the early Church traveled to Rome, began the preaching of the Gospel in this pagan center of civilization and suffered martyrdom there.
It is believed that Saint Peter suffered martyrdom in 64 A.D and St. Paul suffered martyrdom in 67 A.D. - both in Rome.
Saint Peter and Saint Paul are the Principal Patrons of Rome. Throughout the City, you will find numerous dedications to them, numerous statues, numerous shrines which all indicate and show the importance of their contribution to the life of the early Church, through their dying for the Faith and sowing the seeds of Faith in the eternal city.
Let us celebrate this Solemnity with great joy and great Faith. From the beginning, those who followed the Lord have given their lives, as did he, to bring the mystery of Jesus to all of us.
