QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS!!!!
Recently I read an article in the paper that said, “Pope Benedict has restated the fact that the Roman Catholic Church is the only true Church.” Don’t you think that people would find this statement divisive, insulting, and lacking in charity?
To be honest with you, some people may find that statement offensive. However, the author does not intend it to be. Rather it is the lead discussion on Truth, as that Truth has been revealed by Jesus Christ while he was on this earth and through his Church… no matter what any of us thinks,
For instance: The Church teaches that Jesus Christ instituted 7 sacraments … Baptism, Confirmation, Holy Eucharist, Penance, Anointing of the Sick, Holy Orders and Matrimony. During the Reformation in the 15th and 16th Centuries, several Christian communities and newly formed Churches stated there were just 2 Sacraments. They taught that Matrimony and Anointing of the Sick were not Sacraments. Confirmation was not a Sacrament etc., etc. Now you have two different sets of beliefs. Obviously, very obviously, one is right and one is wrong. In the interest of truth, the truth of the teaching of Jesus Christ, the practice of the Church, the celebration of the liturgy of the sacraments, that truth must be clarified. There are 7 sacraments. That was taught by Jesus and that was defined by the Church in the Council of Trent. This is a truth which conforms to the teaching of Jesus Christ. If you have a Christian community, a set of followers of the Lord Jesus who do not believe that there are 7 sacraments, then they cannot be the True Church. Only the Church that conforms absolutely to the teaching of Jesus Christ can be the true Church. Pope Benedict is declaring that the Roman Catholic Church conforms to the teaching and life of the Lord Jesus Christ and that makes it the true Church. If there is a true spirit of ecumenical dialogue and a search for the truth of the teaching of the Lord, than these teachings must form the fundamental basis for that search and will assist greatly in bringing about reunion because the cause of the process is TRUTH.
