I have read a bit about the Pope reinstituting the Latin Mass in our worship. What is this all about?
The Latin Mass, sometimes known as the Tridentine Mass, which was codified following the Council of Trent, served the Church as the primary form of celebration in the Western Church for nearly 5 centuries. When Vatican II initiated the reform of the Roman Catholic Liturgy for the Catholic Church, the Tridentine Mass became virtually extinct.  There were places where the celebration of that form of Mass was allowed, but the permission to celebrate the “old” Latin Mass needed special permission and special circumstances.
Several years ago, Pope John Paul II made the general permission much easier to acquire. He gave general permission to the Bishops of the world to grant permission for the celebration of the “Latin Mass” under certain norms and conditions.  That Mass is celebrated each Sunday in the Diocese of Norwich by a priest who secured that permission.
During this time a new separation or schism appeared in the Church in France which has also branched out. This was started by Archbishop Lefevre and he himself did not heed the voice of Pope John Paul II and celebrated the Mass without ecclesial permission.  To complicate matters even more, the Archbishop then went and ordained several men Bishops and ordained scores of men as priests and sent them across the western world to celebrate this Mass which at that time was an act of disobedience to the authority of the Pope.
Pope Benedict is very concerned about this schism and very hopeful for bringing back into the fold this group which left the Church.  That is part of the reason why he is making it easier to celebrate the Tridentine Mass.  However, as the Holy Father has written, this Latin Mass was in effect for 500 years. It is an authentic form of catholic worship. It retains the great mystery of the Eucharist and has many profound elements to it.   In many European countries there has been a great cry for this Mass to be reinstated. There is great interest in the intellectual community and among people who have never favored the Vatican II Vernacular Mass.
The Holy Father now has granted general permission to the priest to celebrate this Mass with greater freedom.  There are some restrictions during Holy Days, and Holy Week and other special times.  But by in large, this is now general permission.
