QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS!!!!
I heard that Monsignor Bride recently visited the basilica of the Assumption in Baltimore and the basilica of the Immaculate Conception in Washington DC. What is a basilica?
The term “basilica” can refer to an early style of architecture dating back to ancient Rome, but in the liturgical sense, it is a title given to certain churches because of their antiquity, their relation to some saint or historic event, or because of a prominence they have developed as places of devotion and pilgrimage. A church can acquire the title of a basilica by a formal designation or by immemorial custom, a custom that has developed with the approval or at least toleration of the Church hierarchy and has been in place for a century or more.
Basilicas fall into one of two categories, major or greater and minor basilicas. Major basilicas, principally the four great churches in Rome, will have a papal altar and throne, the use of which is reserved to the pope, patriarch or someone designated by them. They will also have a papal door, which is opened at the beginning of a Jubilee Year, to signify the start of a period of time set aside by the pope for the celebration of certain spiritual and historical truths of the Faith, and during which, there is increased opportunities for the faithful to gain indulgences through the performance of good works, such as visiting a basilica, with the proper intentions.
All of the major basilicas are also called patriarchal basilicas, because they were originally each assigned for the use of the bishop of one of the great ancient centers of Christianity.

  • St. John Lateran, the cathedral church of the pope,

bishop of Rome and the Patriarch of the West.

  • St. Peter’s, originally assigned not to the pope, but to the Patriarch of Constantinople.
  • St. Mary Major, for the Patriarch of Antioch.
  • St. Paul Outside the Walls, for the Patriarch of

        Alexandria.

  • St. Lawrence Outside the Walls, which some sources

list as a major basilica and others as minor, for the
               Patriarch of Jerusalem.
With one or two other exceptions, all other basilicas are minor basilicas, which also enjoy certain ceremonial privileges and because of their character as a shrines, places of pilgrimage, will have more frequent times for Mass and Confessions.
