Message from Father Joe

Dear Friends,

Water symbolizes many positive things. It can quench thirst, sustain life, cleanse, and even be a means of relaxation or means of contemplation. As Christians we certainly relate to the cleansing waters of Baptism and speak of the water of life and of living water. Water has such a positive symbolic value that we can forget that water also represents chaos and death. While water can sustain life, hurricanes and broken levees can destroy life in equal and frightening measure. The ancients saw the seas as the home of violent gods. There was a great fear of the sea.

In today’s Gospel, as soon as Peter realized where he was, he began to sink. Jesus came to Peter and enabled him to face his fears by showing him that he could walk on water – that he could walk over chaos and death. God will also come to us; help us walk over water, over the chaos of life, and, if necessary, save us when we can not! Our Gospel story shows us the power of faith. It shows us what Jesus always does for his people.

Let us keep the faith!
Father Joe
